Sweet and Short December :)

Hey Guys! I'm sure everyone is as ready for break as I am!

This month C.A.R.E. rescued a lot more dogs so they have been pretty busy. We attended a mobile adoption last Saturday and will going to another this Saturday. It will be at Walmart on South Campbell if anyone is interested in stopping by :).

This semester we've had some great experiences with the staff and other volunteers at C.A.R.E. My best experiences with them has just been being there and getting to know the people involved, which also let's them get to know me and to rely on me. This project has truly become OURS in every sense. I don't really feel like there have been any tough experiences really. We held back on the activities we had planned for this semester due to complications with C.A.R.E. getting their calendars in. Other than that it has been a pretty easy and accepting partnership.

This semester taught us that we have to manage our time for the project better. Seeing how this semester went, next semester we will be more on our game. We will get started on things sooner. Also the projects will be more based from our side, so we don't have to wait for directions or materials.

Working with Sarah, Anna, and Katrina this semester has taught me how to actually be apart of and work with a group with diverse opinions, study habits, and work ethics. We've done pretty well to get along with each other and to respect each others opinions. We've used our leadership skills we've gained to promote C.A.R.E.

I don't feel like the Stress Free Now and Wellness program have really helped all that much with stress. Sometimes it seems to add more stress than it takes away. The activities were great though. I would gladly continue doing them. Yoga and Tai Chi actually were relaxing and they were kind of fun. Sarah has actually been talking about starting a Tai Chi club on campus now, which I would definitely participate in.

This break I am just looking forward to relaxing. Not doing schoolwork for a while. Reading books that have nothing to do with school and aren't required. I think we're all in need of a little refreshing before next semester. We will be losing Katrina when this semester ends so hopefully being away for a month will give that enough time to sink in.

Hope everyone enjoys their breaks!! Good luck on finals!!
Josie

P.S. Don't forget to bring back any unwanted items after break to donate to Care's Closet- Thrift Store!!

END OF THE SEMESTER! :)

Hello everyone, its almost time for everyone to go home and chill for a month. I'm so excited to be done with this semester! Here's an update on what we've been doing:

We have been going to mobile adoptions this month, one on the 4th at preferred pet supply, and one on the 11th at Walmart on South Campbell. We have also all volunteered this month and helped look after the enormous amount of animals they have at CARE right now. CARE is anticipating the holiday rush to adopt animals, so we are almost over our capacity to house all these animals. We are also still selling calendars, let us know if you want one! We’re starting our drive this month for CARE’s thrift shop, CARE’s closet, so if you guys are getting a lot of new stuff for Christmas and want to donate your unwanted items, bring them back to campus with you!

The best experiences I have had with this agency are definitely when I actually get to see an animal be adopted. It’s always nice to see a dog or cat that has been there for a while walk out the door with a family that will love it and to know it won’t end up in a shelter ever again. The toughest experiences are definitely just the everyday chores around CARE. It’s not easy work to take care of 40+ animals. Sometimes when we’re walking the dogs, one makes a break for it and you have to chase it down the street… which is pretty funny to look back at… but not at the time when you think this dog is about to run out into traffic and such. Another hard thing we have to deal with is the people that come in. Sometimes these people don’t exactly understand that these animals are RESCUED from animal control, and not bred in some home. That’s why we don’t know why some of them have the injuries they do, or behave the way they do. It’s exhausting to explain that to people who are used to getting their pets from breeders.

I think next semester, we will really try to focus more on the PR and fundraising aspect of CARE, instead of going to so many events. Hopefully CARE won’t need us so much for these events and we can focus on our other projects for next semester, like our dollar dog dinner. I know that we will definitely improve next semester, because we have learned to balance our time between school and CARE. A skill that I have acquired from this experience is being able to work in a team. I was never very good at working in teams before college, and now that I have been through so much with my group, I feel like next semester will be amazing. I have learned to communicate effectively and to collaborate with people.

The Wellness Program has definitely been an experience this semester, an experience that I have both loved and hated. I loved the chance to do things like yoga, Tai chi and other activities this semester. It was something new in my week that I could look forward to, and Tai chi was very relaxing. Something that I hated about the Wellness program was having to log online every day. It was more stressful trying to make up a day that I missed than my regular life. Perhaps for future users of this program, instead of logging on every day, it could be a longer session maybe twice a week.

Over winter break, I am looking forward to sleeping, spending time not talking to anyone, and catching up on my TV shows and movies I have wanted to see.

BUURRRRRRR!!

HAY EVERYONE!

As you all probably know it is getting COLD OUT THERE! Time to bundle up and learn how to make ourselves warm.

So since it is December we don't have a lot of time, what with finals and some of us not returning, there is a lot going on. So for this month our project is for the C.A.R.E thrift store that is right next door. We will be putting out flyers or if you have already seen them just to get an idea in your heads, since it is Christmas time and we will be getting new things why not give your old ones away to people that could use it. We are asking people to bring stuff that they have a home or even here back with them to give away. We will have donation boxes all around campus and some at MSU to collect things and bring them to C.A.R.E's thrift store in JANUARY. Or if you want to bring them yourself and look at all the cute animals next door. They have a facebook page if anyone wants to check it out and get directions there just go there page or search them online. (C.A.R.E- Castaway Animal Rescue Effort).... just in case no one new what it meant :)

Well that's I got for now so if anyone has any questions just e-mail one of us four or stop by our house.

Thanks :)

December the Semester is finally over

Thank goodness that it is finially the end of the semester.
This semester I have volunterred at C.A.R.E. almost every other week. Sometimes it was difficult to make it there, however fortunetly there were oppertunities on the weekends for me to volunteer. These oppertunities included going to various places in Springfield to set up mobile adoptions. These mobile adoptions were fun because I got to have one on one time with thr cats and dogs. I also like a proud mother talk about the best attributes all the cats and dogs have, urging an adoption. I also, went to a pat blessing at the Methodist church on Campbell. This was a fun experience. we collected donations from the church followers. Also, we brought one of the puppies to the animal blessing and the dog was prayed for by the assistant pastor.

The best experiences that I have had with this organization this semester would be just enteracting this the animals. It helps me relieve stress to go and hang out for a few hours with the dogs and cats; especially since we cannot have any animals were we live. It is also is nice for the animals to given some love nad affect, when they come from the pound where they are usually treated badly.
Although getting to be with animals once every other week is nice it is tough at the same time. These dogs and cats live in cages and get passed over and over day after day, week after week. It is a sad experience to watch dogs give up trying to be noticed when people come in to look at them. This was the most emotionally tough part of working with this organization.

Next semester I tihnk will be better than this semester. I think this because the basic mission of our project will not be changing and we have already made connections with the staff at C.A.R.E. The project will have more community and campus evolvment aspects to it next semester.

Living in the leadership housing I have learned how to work with a group on an extensive project. I work better alone and I dont trust people to contribute to work that will have my name on it because I dont think that it will be good enough. So i have learned to deal with this problem of mine. I will be able to be a more efficent and better leader.

I think that the Wellness and Stress-Free Program has taught me interesting things about my body and how I can sense when something is wrong with it. I loved LOVEEDDDDD Tai Chi. That releaved the most stress for me and it was fun and I loved the instructor. You can tell that she was eficent in what she was teaching us about and she enjoyed doing it. I think doing the stuff on time was annoying and boring. I didnt want to do it and actually it stressed me more out thinking about doing it..then actually revealing stress.

WINTER BREAK....I look forward to doing nothing and laying in my bed. I might read a book not related to school. IM EXCITED

Time is Flying!

Hey all!
I can't believe November is almost over already! C.A.R.E. has been doing well. We've only sold a few calendars so far, but I'm sure we will get more sold over break. We went to another mobile adoption at the beginning of the month. Two dogs were adopted that day. It's such an awesome feeling watching them be taken to a real home. I feel we are truly helping C.A.R.E. We help at the shelter when they need us, we help with mobile adoptions, we're raising money for them and helping with their fundraisers, and we're trying to spread the word about them in general. We haven't had many issues with C.A.R.E. thus far.

Living with my three best friends has its ups and downs. No matter how irritated we get at each other though, we always make up. Sarah and I butt heads the most, but we put ourselves in check and apologize. It happens a lot lol. Anna's pretty quiet, although she's definitely a lot more open with else now than she ever has been. Katrina is usually the peace keeper between Sarah and I.

This month was our turn to host the Summit Social. We had a house cleaning frenzy, then a shopping spree :)
We made food and played music. I felt like it was pretty successful. We didn't have games or crafts, but lots of people came over and we all visited for a while. I feel like I know a few more of the Summit crew now.
Thanks to everyone who came and hung out with us! Special thanks to Ethan Graham for grilling hot dogs!

See everyone in class! Don't forget to check out our calendars!
~Josie

November!

Hello everyone!

It's finally November and time for Thanksgiving :)

This month has been a good one for our summit group. We had our summit social on Wednesday and quite a few of our classmates showed up. Ethan grilled hot dogs for us and we made 7 layer dip and chips and I baked some cookies. I'm glad everyone liked at least a couple of the things we served. We tried to have something for everyone. Thanks to you all who came, we appreciate it!

This year is going really well so far, there have been numerous mobile adoptions and different fundraisers which we have participated. We have also all been volunteering regularly since September and have almost all of our 15 hours done. I feel that we have made a good impact on CARE, I have regular communication with both the PR director, and the volunteer coordinator so we are always aware of and able to attend their events.

There haven't been that many struggles so far, except that sometimes our volunteer shifts get off track and that our calenders took so long to be finished and put us behind schedule. Other than those things, its been running pretty smoothly.

We as a group have had our fair share of issues living with each other, but overall I believe that we are a good team. I live with three of my best friends in our own place, I'm pretty sure this is as good as it gets when it comes to rooming situations in college. I have really enjoyed all my time with these girls and look forward to the rest of the year.

The wellness program is going... okay. I don't really like listening to that lady but I do enjoy the opportunities that we have to try new things like Tia chi and acupuncture.

Well I think this blog post is finished. Have a good Thanksgiving everyone!

and here comes the cold

Hay everyone!!

It's November and it is getting really cold out there as you all can prolly tell. Our SOCIAL was yesterday and thanks so much for everyone that came. It was a blast!!

We're selling the C.A.R.E. calenders by the way!! They are $10.00 each and all proceeds go to C.A.R.E. so we can use all the support we can get... and btw for all you ORGANIC STUDENTS!! you can get 5 points extra credit for buying a calender.

C.A.R.E has been doing good though. They have had people coming in adopting and playing with the animals which is so wonderful because that means more animals can come in and be potentially adopted. All of these animals deserve a loving home and our summit group is proud to be apart of this organization. We have had mobile adoptions going on, which is always fun to see people play with the animals and it's even more EXCITING to see them get adopted while on the mobile adoption.

Well that it's for now. C Ya

November

Hi Everyone!
Happy November and Thanksgiving....
The C.A.R.E. summit house is going good. Our social is tomorrow and that should be fun. We spent the whole day cleaning and making food. It should be fun! And we are looking forward to everyone being there.

I volunteered at C.A.R.E. today. I actually almost lost a dog today...which was not good at all. It ran directly inside today however. Thank goodness. There were so many little kittens this time. I was so excited to play with them, when I went by and gave them all water and dinner. It was really sad that some of the kittens actually have ring worm...so I wasn't allowed to play with them. But Nikki (person of staff Tuesday) said that they will be ready to be adopted in just a few short weeks.

As always it has been fun living in summit and hanging out with animals every week. I am so happy that I was privileged enough to be able to participate in this charitable event.

It's October!! Time for Cute Animals!!

HAY EVERYONE!!

Katrina here and it's OCTOBER!! I have volunteered twice this past week and the love for these animals keeps on growing. Each one is special in their own way and all deserve loving homes. And actually tonight while I was there one of the love dogs, Jake, was ADOPTED by a caring couple. I hope they love and care for him like all of us, volunteers and workers do. We all wish him the best of luck!! :)

SOOOOOO..... Since it is nearly the end of October we just got our CALENDERS IN!! They are being sold by C.A.R.E. and our summit group. They are $10.00 dollars a piece so contact me, Sarah, Anna, or Josie if you would like to buy one. All proceeds go to C.A.R.E. to help out the adorable dogs and cats they have. We have all looked at them and they are for the year 2011 so please help us and buy one!!! They're really cute and who doesn't love animal calenders.

ALSO.... Some of our calender events have changed. Since our calenders took longer than expected these will be sold all year up until we run out or people want more. In November, we will be making the blankets since it will be getting very cold and our pins will also be done. Sooooo we have a lot going on in November along with our social at APT 625-A.

That's it for now... and HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!!!

The Month of October

This month was stressful and exciting all at the same time. There was sometimes trouble in the house and other times we were just all hanging out and having fun. More focused on C.A.R.E. though, I have been to facility and volunteered a few times. It is always fun I play with the cats on a Sunday mornings. Each cat wants more and more attention. They are always trying to escape from the crates just to be with you. I love it! I sometimes wish we could have animals in campus housing. This time I get to spend with the cats is a time when I feel relaxed. I come home after that time and feel like I really was doing some good for the day.

Earlier this month Anna and I went to an animal blessing. We went to a Methodist church and took one of the puppies that was currently at the shelter. We let the puppy run around with the other animals there, that were waiting in the parking lot to be blessed. We also had a booth set up to collect money for C.A.R.E. We collected only around $25, but any money counts when you are helping to save innocent lives. The Associate pastor then blessed the puppy and gave us a certificate to show that people care about animals and god does too.

We also finally got the C.A.R.E. calendars. IF ANYONE WANTS ONE LET US KNOW!!!!!! The first time that all four of us ever went to C.A.R.E. there was a cat named Midnight. The cat looked just like one of my cats that I have at home named Brutuss. All of the pictures that were featured in our Summit Park presentation I am with Midnight. It so happens that over the summer Anna adopted Midnight and now he has a loving home. However, I was surprised and excited to see that Midnight was featured in the calendar for one of the months. He looked so cute and healthy. The calendar shows animals that the shelter has saved, and those that have been adopted.

This year so far has been exciting and stressful, but hanging out with the cats at C.A.R.E. no matter how terrible my day is always makes me happy!

October Pics

October!!

Well it's the last week of October and we finally received our C.A.R.E. calendars. They are very cute. They only cost $10 and, of course, all proceeds go to C.A.R.E. If anyone is interested in purchasing one let Sarah, Anna, Katrina, or I know. We've had some delays in making the items we intended on for October, but November is a new month and we intend to get our projects into full swing, as well as our Summit Social. Since we didn't make the pins we had planned on for this month we have been trying to volunteer more to make up for it. We are attaching photos of some of our favorites animals at C.A.R.E. this month. We hope they inspire you all to help some of these precious animals.

Photos from October :)

October with CARE

Hello everyone, October has been a very long month, and I know that everyone is excited for halloween, myself included. I have done a couple things with CARE this month including volunteering a couple of times and participating in a fundraiser for CARE at Campbell United Methodist Church.

When I volunteer at CARE, I mostly walk dogs and chat with visitors to the adoption center. If I have extra time I also play with the cats and make sure all the animals have water and food. I go for two hour periods on Fridays from 1-3. It's a really enjoyable experience and I look forward to my volunteer shifts. I love walking in and seeing that a dog or cat that has been there for a couple months waiting for a home has finally been adopted, it definitely makes all the hard work that goes into this no kill shelter worth it.

Sarah and I went to a fundraiser for CARE at the Methodist church I mentioned above. They are located on east republic st. They were holding a "pet blessing" day, where the members of the congregation could bring their beloved pets to be blessed with good health for a year. There was quite a variety of pets present. There were tiny dogs to large grey hounds, a police dog named Raider, a small boy with his pet goat (so cute, the goat was tiny and he was walking it on a leash :)) and a lady with a pet skunk she was carrying around in her purse. We took a dog from CARE named barney, he was very well behaved for the most part, but wanted to play with all the dogs, including the larger ones who weren't so keen on being bothered by him. We took donations for CARE and gave out some litereature about them. The whole event took about two hours, and I would say it was a success.

I didn't really discuss why I chose summit, and why I wanted to work with CARE in my previous post. I chose summit because it would fulfill some of my requirements for the leadership program at Drury, and it seemed like a really good oppurtunity to get out in the community that I grew up in and offer some help. I was unsure about who I would be living with, but my roommates kind of fell into my lap one night at a mutual friend's house. We were all talking about how stressed we were trying to find roommates, when someone pointed out that we could all just live together. Thus, our summit group was created. I now live with three of my best friends, and they are making my sophmore year of college the best yet :)

We chose CARE because it is less known and smaller than many organizations in Springfield. They are also the only no-kill animal shelter in the area. I really love animals, probably more than people sometimes, so I knew that I wanted to help out in some way. They were very glad to recieve our help, and this year is going smoothly. Ive been in contact with Yoko Williams (the volunteer coordinator) and Kiersten Bagley (The new PR person for CARE) all year and we have been able to raise some money for CARE already.

So what's next for CARE? The calanders are FINALLY ready, so we will be collecting those and selling them for CARE. We are also making ribbons for animal welfare awareness. We will be selling both of those around campus and artwalk during November, so watch for those. All proceeds will go to CARE.

Month 1 at Summit

Hey all! This is Josie Yost. The first month of being in Summit has turned out great. It started out a little bumpy, but that's to be expected with four girls with different personalities. We've gotten used to each others habits and lifestyles now. I live with my three best friends and life doesn't get much better than that.

The way we decided on Summit was really random. Last year we knew each other, but we weren't very close. Katrina and I were friends and we just kind of knew Sarah and Anna. We were all at friends house one night and everyone was talking about how they needed to start thinking of housing for the next year. A mutual friend looked at the four of us and said, "Hey, why don't you all live together?" That was it. From then on it was decided. We researched places around Springfield that could use our help, called to different faculty members about advising us, and put a lot of time and effort into our presentation.

We chose to work with C.A.R.E. because they are small and less-known and they were very interested in having us help them and actually working with us in return. Thus far, everyone I have met at C.A.R.E. seems like good people and really committed to the rescue efforts. I hope we can help them as much as possible with this project.
